LAKESIDE GARDEN GUILD MEETINGS ARE BACK AFTER A 2 YEAR COVID HIATUS!

ON TUESDAY, 12 APRIL, MERELYN SHORE HOSTED THE FIRST IN-PERSON MEETING IN 2 YEARS ON HER BEAUTIFUL PATIO AND GARDEN AREA.  NO FOOD OR DRINKS WERE PROVIDED, WITH REQUIRED MASKING, SOCIAL DISTANCING, AND PROOF OF VACCINATIONS.  THAT DID NOT SLOW DOWN THE HAPPY CHATTING AND CATCHING UP WITH OLD FRIENDS.

NEW PRESIDENT ALLEGRA WILLIS CONFIRMED WHAT MOST MEMBERS WANTED:  TO START MEETING AGAIN IN PERSON, IN OPEN AIR SPACES, MASKS REQUIRED.  AFTER A BRIEF SEGMENT OF COMMITTEE REPORTS, THE MICROPHONE WAS PASSED AROUND SO EVERY ATTENDEE HAD A CHANCE TO DISCUSS WHAT SHE HAD DONE OVER THE PAST 2 YEARS, AND WHAT IDEAS SHE HAD FOR THE FUTURE OF LAKESIDE GARDEN GUILD (POSSIBLY A 2022 FLORAL SHOW), AND IDEAS FOR UPCOMING MEETINGS.

BONNIE NEWMAN SOLICITED IDEAS FOR MEETING TOPICS, CATHY SHEEHAN ASKED FOR FLORAL SHOW VOLUNTEERS, AND SHARON SMITH NEEDS VOLUNTEERS TO HOST UPCOMING MEETING (PREFERRED WITH OUTDOOR PATIOS FOR SOCIAL DISTANCING).

Many thanks to Mary Wolf for hosting the May Lakeside Garden Guild meeting on her beautiful verandah.  The panoramic views and light breezes made for a comfortable meeting, despite the typical May heat.

For the first time, the Guild used Zoom for members who were not able to attend in person, and it worked out quite well.  There was discussion on video-taping the meetings for future usage.  (Dare we say that we have joined the 21st Century!)

After the business reports, Cathy Sheehan gave an outstanding program (and wonderful handout - be sure to get one!) on the basics of floral arrangement.  She broke it down into easy-to-follow steps, starting with how to get ideas, to finding material to execute your design, what flowers will last the longest, to caring for your flowers, and yes - even how to transport to a floral show.  There were lots of excellent questions, and discussion of a possible field trip to Tonala to find material.

Thank you, Cathy, for the confidence boosting program.  The Guild is planning more of these programs in the near future.

AFTER AN INCONVENIENT LAKESIDE FLAREUP OF COVID, THE JULY MEETING VENUE WAS CHANGED TO THE VIVERO DEL GALLO, NEXT TO THE CHAPALA TRAIN STATION.  A SURPRISE GUEST SPEAKER, OUR OWN PREVIOUS GUILD MEMBER ROSARIO HARO, GAVE A TOUR OF THE EXTENSIVE NURSERY, FOLLOWED BY HER DEMONSTRATION OF THE KOKEDAMA TECHNIQUE OF POTTING PLANTS.  OF COURSE, SHE MADE IT LOOK SO EASY!  QUITE A FEW MEMBERS FOUND NEW ADDITIONS FOR THEIR GARDENS IN THE LARGE VIVERO.  ALL IN ALL, IT WAS ANOTHER LOVELY DAY TO MEET WITH GUILD FRIENDS.

AFTER A LAST-MINUTE CHANGE IN MEETING LOCATION (ROADWORK IN CHAPALA), WE MET AT THE SOL & LUNA RESTAURANT.  THERE WERE SEVERAL GUESTS IN ATTENDANCE:  VICKIE CHRISTENSEN BROUGHT JULIA LONGFELLOW (JULES TO HER FRIENDS!), SUSAN BAINBRIDGE MADE HER SECOND VISIT AS THE GUEST OF ALLEGRA WILLIS, AND LUCILLE JOHNSTONE MADE HER 3RD VISIT AS GUEST OF DI ANNE MACZKO.  THE PROGRAM WAS “DESIGNING YOUR OWN GARDEN” BY LGG MEMBER AND MASTER GARDENER JUSTINE BERTRAM.  HER PRESENTATION WAS JAM PACKED WITH ESSENTIAL DETAILS OF THE ELEMENTS OF DESIGN: LINE, SHAPE, COLOR, TEXTURE, AND BALANCE.  SHE EMPHASIZED THE PLANNING STAGES AND TO PAY ATTENTION TO HOW MUCH SUN OR IF THERE ARE WATER ISSUES.  SKETCHING IT OUT IS IMPORTANT, BUT FEEL FREE TO MOVE THE POTS AROUND BEFORE DIGGING HOLES.  SHE DISCUSSED THE VALUE OF PROPER SOIL, AND MADE RECOMMENDATIONS ON HOW TO IMPROVE IT.  JUSTINE PASSED AROUND SOME OF HER DIAGRAMS AND SKETCHES OF PAST GARDEN DESIGNS AND PHOTOS TO SHOW HOW THE GARDENS CHANGE FROM MONTH TO MONTH.  A GROUP OF US STAYED AFTERWARDS FOR LUNCH SINCE WE WERE ABLE TO PRE-ORDER OUR LUNCH.  THE FOOD SERVICE WAS FAST, AND THE MEALS WERE DELICIOUS AND GENEROUS!

EXCITING NEWS:  FIRST, OUR NEWEST MEMBER LILLIAN JOHNSTONE WAS PRESENTED HER NAME LANYARD AND HER MEMBERSHIP BOOK.  THEN, FORMER MEMBER OLGA SPRAGGETT ANNOUNCED THAT SHE WANTED TO REJOIN AFTER A BREAK OF SEVERAL YEARS.  BOTH LADIES WERE ENTHUSIASTICALLY WELCOMED.

THE PROGRAM HOSTED BY BONNIE NEWMAN WAS THE CREATION OF HOLIDAY ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE UPCOMING SALES.  SHE BROUGHT LOTS OF MATERIALS FOR IDEAS, AND OTHER MEMBERS CONTRIBUTED MATERIALS, TOO.  VICKIE CHRISTENSEN IMPRESSED EVERYONE WITH HER PALM BLOOMS.  SOME MEMBERS JUMPED IN RIGHT AWAY CREATING ARRANGEMENTS AS OTHER MEMBERS WATCHED AND GOT GREAT IDEAS.  MARGARET QUINN IMPRESSED US ALL WITH HER PPE (PERSONAL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT), SPRAYING GOLD PAINT TO EMBELLISH THE DRIED PLANT MATERIALS.  BY THE TIME THE MEETING WAS FINISHED, OUR PREORDERED MEALS FROM SOL Y LUNA RESTAURANT WERE READY – A DELICIOUS ENDING TO A GREAT MEETING.
